There are some moments that feel so big, even while they’re happening—and Jaina and Isiah’s surprise proposal was absolutely one of them.

I’ve known Jaina for years. We met through Greek Life and became close while working together as Muskie Preview Coordinators at Muskingum. From the very beginning, there was no Jaina without Isiah. They’ve been together since high school, and watching them grow through college has been such a sweet experience.

When they booked a graduation session with me—including their best friends Madalyn and Gannon—it was all part of the plan. Only Jaina didn’t know it.

A few days before the shoot, Madalyn reached out to let me in on the secret: Isiah was planning to propose. He had a spot picked out and even sent me the exact location. We made sure everything felt natural, letting the session flow as if it was just a typical graduation photo day. But of course, it wasn’t.

When we arrived at the original spot, I was quietly preparing—watching for that moment when he’d get down on one knee. But it didn’t happen. A few photos later, we were all a little confused (me and Madalyn included!). Turns out, Isiah had changed his mind. He didn’t love the original location anymore and chose a new one on the fly: in front of Montgomery Hall, the beautiful admissions building on campus.

And thank goodness he did. The light was golden, the setting was classic, and everything fell perfectly into place.

The moment itself was pure magic. Jaina was completely surprised—overwhelmed with joy and smiles. Isiah had such a heartfelt, emotional proposal. His words were beautiful and genuine, and you could feel how much love filled that space the second he got down on one knee. My heart was racing as I made sure to capture every second.

Afterward, the best part was hearing all the behind-the-scenes stories come out. Jaina was in awe hearing how many people had been in on the secret. There was so much laughter and excitement, and we ended up taking even more photos—couple portraits, champagne pops, and fun group shots that felt extra special now that the secret was out.

My favorite shot? Probably the one of Jaina showing off her ring for the first time. Her smile in that moment said it all.

Being trusted to capture a moment like this—especially for friends I’ve watched grow together over time—means the world to me. These kinds of memories go by in a flash, and having the photos to look back on helps you relive that joy all over again.
